Most presidential candidates don't finance their campaigns with a lawn-mowing business, but most of them aren't fifteen-year-old high school sophomores either. Matt Richtel, New York Times contributor and published author, has found a way to put Twitter to a literary use. He is publishing a thriller, or "Twiller" via the microblogging site.
"It's about a man who wakes up in the mountains of Colorado, suffering from amnesia, with a haunting feeling he is a murderer," Richtel writes on the New York Times Web site. "In possession of only a cellphone that lets him Twitter, he uses the phone to tell his story of self-discovery, 140 characters at a time."

Bank of Books, a bookseller in Ventura, California, is giving away 10,000 books this Saturday as a thank-you to the community for voting the store the county's best independent bookseller five consecutive years in the Ventura County Reporter.
Customers can have their pick of any book in a designated free area, which will contain more than 100 categories of books.

The Web site of the Orwell Prize is revisiting author George Orwell's diaries, posting each entry on a blog exactly seventy years after it was written.
"George Orwell started keeping a diary on August 9, 1938, and maintained it on a more or less daily basis till shortly before his death in 1950," the Telegraph reports.
Many entries deal with the weather. Seventy years ago today, he was aboard a ship bound for Morocco.

The Washington Post picks its list of the best fall books. Several title from independent publishers are named here, including The Elegance of the Hedgehog, by Muriel Barbery (Europa, Sept.): "The all-too-human tenants of a Paris apartment building, as seen through the eyes of the concierge."
